To add decorations to your house, dab a small amount of icing glue to the underside of each piece of candy and hold it in place until it sets. When you are doing the roof, you can try to pipe the icing and lay on a row of candy. If this doesn't work, go back to doing each piece one at a time.
The Necco candy discs make great shingles for the roof. For a thatched roof, use mini shredded-wheat. You can spread additional icing around the house to cover the base and make a yard of "snow". Make a snowman out of marshmallows or add a candy Santa. Small tootsie rolls make an easy lamp post or fence. Pointed ice cream cones placed upside down make good evergreen trees. Non-edible decorations can also be place around the house to complete your scene. Just make sure these are removed before the eating begins.
Use your imagination. And don't forget the most fun comes when it's time to eat. Let everyone pick their favorite pieces and dive in!
One more thing... if you find it hard to break apart the gingerbread house for dessert, get out the hammer and let someone give it a good whack.
Extra Tip:
Gingerbread houses can be made as Advent Houses. To do this, cut slots going up the corners of the house and stick a coin or a chocolate wafer in the slots. Each day of Advent, children get to pull something out of the slots.
