Christmas Begins
 | Nobody knows the exact day Jesus was born, but on our modern calendar, He was probably born in July. At the time he lived, people didn't care about birthdays or record this information. The day people died is what they remembered. Birthdays weren't celebrated and weren't important.
It wasn't until the 320's that the Christian church decided they should pick a date to celebrate the birth of Christ. They didn't have a celebration in December, so they officially recognized December 25th as the day. |
They wanted the celebration to be a prayerful mass, so they named the holiday "Christ's Mass". In 337, the new holiday got a huge boost when the Roman Emperor Constantine was baptized and Christianity became the offical state religion.
The first year we definitely know Christmas was officially celebrated on December 25th was in 352. Since that time, it has been the most holy day of the year for all Christians.
