Christmas Carolers
 | Carolers who sang while going from house to house can be traced back to the early Mesopotamians long before we were celebrating Christmas. But, caroling as a holiday tradition started during the Middle Ages in England and France. The word "carol" originally meant dancing and singing, but the meaning changed over time to specifically refer to singing Christmas songs. |
People gathered together to make small choirs on the village green or strolled through neighborhoods of the towns. Their singing would draw people out of their homes to listen and enjoy the music. Coins or cakes were often handed out to the singers, so it was also a way for poor people to earn their Christmas gifts.
Today, Christmas caroling is a social event that brings people together for a few hours of fun. The carolers usually visit the homes of fiends and are offered hot chocolate or cookies before they move on to the next stop.
